CKA Charlama is a centre for contemporary culture and art in Sarajevo, dedicated to research, production and archiving.

The institution

Founded in 2015, CKA Charlama works as an independent platform connecting local and international artists, curators, researchers and theorists. Our work spans exhibitions, lectures, workshops, residencies and publications.

The institution is housed in a historic building in central Sarajevo, serving as a space for display, research and encounters. Charlama Depot, our archival department, preserves and digitises documentation of contemporary art from the region.

Research and production

CKA Charlama develops long-term research projects addressing collective memory, urban space, cultural policy and contemporary artistic practice.

Our production programme supports artists in realising new work, offering space, technical support and critical context for experimental projects.

SubDokumenta Sarajevo, our international biennial, is a core part of our programme — a platform for global dialogue on contemporary art and its role in society.
