The Sacred and the Profane
Photography
Renate Graf
Renate Graf is an Austrian artist and photographer who lives and works between Paris and Portugal. Her artistic practice is primarily based on analog black-and-white photography, through which she has developed a distinctive visual language situated at the intersection of documentary, literature, and poetic reflection. Inspired by writers such as Fernando Pessoa, Rainer Maria Rilke, T. S. Eliot, and Hermann Broch, she uses photography as a means of exploring memory, travel, and cultural experience.
Over more than three decades of artistic practice, she has produced numerous photographic series developed during her travels throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and North America. Her works often take the form of visual diaries and artist books, combining photography with text and personal narratives. A special place within her oeuvre is occupied by projects dedicated to India, the Silk Road, France, and the studio of artist Anselm Kiefer.
Renate Graf’s work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Europe, Asia, and the United States and is included in important public and private collections. Her photography is recognized for its unique combination of documentary sensitivity, poetic atmosphere, and reflections on transience, place, and human experience.
