Zoran Grebenarović

Zoran Grebenarović (1952–2019, Leskovac, Serbia) was a painter whose work played a distinctive role in contemporary Serbian art from the early 1980s onward. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade in 1981 and subsequently spent several years living and working in New York. Upon returning to Serbia, he developed a recognizable artistic language grounded in the exploration of space, light, geometry, and historical memory.

His work combined elements of post-minimalist geometry, constructivist principles, Byzantine heritage, and contemporary painterly research. Throughout his career, he created paintings-objects, employing relief wooden panels and complex spatial structures that blurred the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Alongside his gallery practice, he was deeply engaged in sacred art, producing frescoes, icons, and mural paintings for numerous Orthodox churches.

Grebenarović exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions in Serbia and abroad. His works are included in important museum and private collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, the Belgrade City Museum, and the Zepter Museum.

Over four decades of artistic practice, Zoran Grebenarović developed a unique visual language in which tradition and contemporaneity, geometry and spirituality, converge, securing his place among significant figures of contemporary Serbian art.
